“Before I decided to go into the farming business/industry in Malaysia, it took alot of research and determination to know exactly what I was getting myself into. As a person who has never really practised large scale farming, I had to look into the pros and cons of the farming business as well as learn how to handle food. It takes a lot to be in this kind of industry especially if you are looking to make a profit out of it. There are definitely key things to look into before going into the farming business,” explains Darren Yaw CEO and Founder of Darren Yaw Malaysia Farms.

One of the main inspirations for the Darren Yaw Malaysia Farms founder to choose to venture into farming in Malaysia, is because he caught the opportunity to put the many empty spaces of land in Malaysia to use.

Darren Yaw Malaysia Farms Founder Recommends Considering the Following:

  • ORGANIC AND NON ORGANIC FOODS

This was the main drive for the beginning of Darren Yaw Malaysia farms. The Darren Yaw Malaysia Farms founder said he began to notice that many of the foods that were imported into Malaysia were non organic. During a break he took off work, he began to get an interest in gardening and cooking and would make his wife exquisite meals.

According to the Darren Yaw Malaysia Farms founder, it was then that he realised that there was a difference between the crops he grew in his garden and what he bought in the retail stores. That was when he decided to learn more about the difference between organic and non-organic foods and why the market was stifled with non-organic foods.

It also came to his realisation that as Malaysian consumers, we did not really know how the food was grown, whether it was injected and with harmful chemicals, how it was harvested or transported.

“I mean it only made sense for me to begin using the spaces we have in Malaysia by putting them to good use and growing pure organic crops. By growing food on our own, it would be easier and better because we would know exactly what we are consuming, be able to transport it like it should and in a safe way as well as control the harvest and make sure we only consume the best. Like this is not good enough, I would be able to create a profit from selling pure organic and not non organic foods. When you look at it, it really is a win-win situation for both parties,” said Darren Yaw Malaysia’s founder.

  • REGIONAL AND SEASONAL FOODS

Before he began the Darren Yaw Malaysia farms, he states that it was important for him to know the kind of foods that would thrive in malaysian soil. Darren Yaw also mentioned that not every food grown in other countries were able to thrive in Malaysia and even if they were, the season of their growth had to be determined. This is because Malaysia has different seasons and it is important to establish which food or fruits thrive better in which seasons.

“As a new farmer, it honestly takes a whole lot of experimenting, research and studying,” said the Darren Yaw Malaysia Farms founder.  This is what he had to go through before beginning his farming business. “If I knew, I should have definitely just hired experts to do the job for me. However, for some reason, I felt the need to do it myself because this motivated me to ensure it was safe not only for my consumption but for the consumption of others,” the Darren Yaw Malaysia Farms founder and CEO says.

  • YOU CANNOT DO IT ALL ALONE

As much as Darren Yaw was excited to begin his Malaysia farm business and wanted to be as involved as possible, he mentioned that it became a bit hard for him to manage the large scale farming. Initially Darren Yaw mentioned that it was easier when he was practising it on small scale in the comfort of his home however when he got good at it and decided to create the Darren Yaw Malaysian farms so as to gain a profit from selling organic food, he knew that he definitely needed a hand of professionals in order for the Darren Yaw farms in Malaysia to succeed. It was definitely an eye opener that producing food on a larger scale was harder than growing it for one’s personal consumption.

“My main motivation has always been to create a large scale food production to improve the country’s food resilience and that was the main reason behind the formation of Darren Yaw Malaysia farms,” says Darren Yaw.
